Amazon Web Services’ dominance in cloud computing has been further cemented by increasing growth and revenues, placing the company as one of the leading facilitators of activity on the internet today.

AWS had sales of US$1.57 billion in the first quarter of 2015, with overall group sales for the first three months of the year amounting to $22.72 billion, a 15% rise on the same period a year earlier, the company announced. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos singled out its cloud operations as a key driver of current and future revenue growth.

“Amazon Web Services is a $5 billion business and still growing fast — in fact it’s accelerating,” he said in a statement. “Born a decade ago, AWS is a good example of how we approach ideas and risk-taking at Amazon,” he added.

Bezos said AWS achieved this by placing a firm focus on the customer and their needs, as well as constantly innovating to deliver market-leading cloud-computing services and operating to the highest of standards.

“We manage by two seemingly contradictory traits: impatience to deliver faster and a willingness to think long term. We are so grateful to our AWS customers and remain dedicated to inventing on their behalf,” Bezos said.

In recent months, AWS has introduced an array of updated and additional services to its cloud offerings, while at the same time lowering costs for clients. It comes amid intense competition from other major cloud providers, including Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and others, who are all trying to dominate the sector. One of the newest AWS innovations is Amazon Machine Learning, which enables clients to crunch large amount of consumer and other data and get predictions and trends they can use to develop products and services and become more profitable.

Amazon said earlier this year that AWS now has more than one million customers around the world, ranging from small businesses running websites and ecommerce platforms to major corporations and hot tech start-ups, and also the CIA, the US government’s spy agency.
